Indian ecommerce is a payments problem wearing a catalogue costume. If checkout is awkward, nothing else matters. If invoices are nonsense, the CA will make it matter later — expensively.
This is a practical note for sellers using a storefront like Softpage’s online store and payments. It is not tax advice. GST rules change; your accountant wins arguments with the portal, not this blog.
Make the paid order the source of truth
A sale is not a UPI screenshot in a group chat. A sale is a paid order in the system, with a number, a customer, and a SKU list. Everything downstream — packing, delivery, support — should start there.
That is why payments belong inside the commerce platform. When you “just share a UPI ID”, you create a second ledger in your head. Festival weeks will beat that ledger.
Offer the methods people already use
UPI is the default for a huge share of digital retail. Cards still appear on higher tickets and corporate cards. COD is a commercial choice (cash-flow and RTO), not a moral one.
Test:
- A successful UPI pay
- A failed pay (does the order stay unpaid?)
- A refund path you can explain in one sentence
If you also bill in the shop, POS should not be a stranger to those methods. Customers do not care that your “online gateway” and “counter QR” are different companies.
GST: what the software should make easy
At minimum, your catalogue should know:
- Whether you are registered
- HSN/SAC if your CA asked for it
- Whether the listed price is inclusive
The store should be able to issue an invoice that a human can match to a bank line. Softpage is built as business software for that environment. It does not file your GSTR for you by magic, and we will not claim it does.
If you are composition vs regular, or you sell interstate, stop guessing — that is a 30-minute CA conversation that saves a year of cleanup.
COD, prepaid, and honesty on the product page
If you offer COD, say the extra fee (if any) and the geographies. If you are prepaid-only, say that too. Surprise COD refusals are how delivery partners and you both lose money.
Prepaid UPI with a clear invoice tends to attract customers who intended to buy. That is not snobbery; it is RTO maths.
Month-end without five CSVs
The hidden cost of a DIY stack is reconciliation: gateway dashboard, courier dashboard, WhatsApp, Tally. A platform like Softpage will not delete Tally from the universe. It should reduce how often you retype the same order.
Landing-page and checkout leads can also sit in CRM when the person did not buy yet. Do not mix unpaid leads into the GST invoice book.
A launch checklist
- One test SKU, real money, real refund.
- Invoice PDF or shareable invoice you would show a customer.
- Written returns policy that matches what you will actually do.
- A named person who checks failed payments daily.

The test
Ask your CA: “Can I send you a month of Softpage invoices and not be embarrassed?” If the answer is no, fix item names, GSTIN on the header, and tax breakup before you scale ads. Ads on a messy ledger only scale the mess.
